“We must always travel in hope.” Mr. Carson, Downton Abbey, Season 5. It’s a big weekend for @downtonabbey_official fans – the movie premieres today! Are you as excited as we are to see what the Crawleys and their staff have been up to?! Downton Abbey has been a part of our lives for the past few years, joining obsessions with English stories and storytellers, featuring everyone from Harry Potter and Jane Austen to Henry VII to the modern monarchy. We are not ashamed to be sold-out Anglophiles, so please imagine how we very nearly died of happiness when we were invited to visit @highclere_castle, the real Downton Abbey, for a vintage garden party a few years ago. There’s something magical about seeing a place you’ve fallen in love with via books, film or TV, and that’s one of the reasons I love visiting such locations. A place is so much more alive when a storyteller has brought it to life in a way that’s made you laugh and cry. Castles, museums and historic sites are wonderful in their own right, but when you can imagine characters you love and care for in that same space, it’s just that much more powerful and personal. As we all dive back into the world of Downton Abbey this weekend, I’ll be sharing some photos from our experience at Highclere Castle. Trust me, Downton fans won’t want to miss this series! ?? A cup of chai while waiting for the henna on my hands to dry off. Downstairs, Mehendi (henna body art) ceremony was on full force – there was music, drums, tons of colorful decors, and people were dancing, getting mehendi designs applied to their hands, while others are sipping on a cup of chai. Chai is a spiced tea beverage originated from India. The base is usually a strong black tea mixed with various indian spices – usually cardamom, cinnamon, cloves, ginger, and black peppercorn. Despite the Indian origin, the name Chai likely originated from Mandarin word for tea, which is "cha". Chai is often served in a "cutting" portion (half a cup) and in most part of North India, it's usually served in an unglazed clay cup called Bhar. These clay cups are only to be used once – I was quite surprised when I saw people throwing away their clay cups into the bin, but these cups are actually environmentally friendly. The clay would return back into soil once disposed, unlike plastic cups. Clay also has tons of health benefits compared to using plastic cups. I'm totally a fan! I was in India last week for a friend's wedding in Rajashtan which was just the most insane wedding celebration I've been a part of thus far (if you missed my stories on it, you can view the highlight on my profile!). The wedding lasted an ENTIRE weekend and consisted of multiple cultural ceremonies. I was on sensory overload and learning tons about Indian culture and food. My favorite food discoveries? Chai (of course), Paneer (in anything) and Pani Puri. They're not exactly new to me – I've had them in Singapore but they just seem to taste a thousand times better in India. Thank you Akanksha and Aditya for having us! ❤️ Definitely a memorable weekend for me. #shotoniPhone #iPhoneXSMax #india #rajashtan #chai #clay #bhar #incredibleindia #mehendi #mehndi #indianwedding #indian

Alaska National Parks Week, Day 2 ⠀ The best known national park in Alaska is most certainly Denali National Park. ⠀ Denali gets its name from the iconic mountain in the center of the park, Mount Denali. (aka the mountain formerly known as Mount McKinley). ⠀ Denali is the highest point in North America, and is the 3rd tallest mountain in terms of topographic prominence, which is the measured distance between the lowest and highest points between topographic lines. That means that Denali “looks” huge when you are in its presence. (Only Mount Everest and Aconcagua have higher prominences). ⠀ Denali is also often covered by clouds. One of the most interesting facts about the park is that 75% of the visitors to the park never actually see the mountain because of cloud cover. 50% of the people who attempt to climb the mountain succeedd, which means you have a better chance of climbing it than you do of seeing it! ⠀ There is a single road which enters the park and it extends for 92 miles. ⠀ With one notable exception, you cannot drive into the park. Only buses are allowed to enter. You can park your car and get on one of the buses which will take you into the heart of the park. ⠀ The exception is the annual road lottery. A limited number of private vehicles are allowed into the park one weekend each year in the fall, and the vehicles are chosen by lottery. ⠀ There are some lodges deep into the park which were grandfathered when the park was expanded in 1978. Camp Denali, which is where I stayed during my visit, is by far the best option for staying in the park. ⠀ One of the reasons for the popularity of the park is not only the mountain, but the fact that it is the only national park in Alaska which is accessible by both car and train. Many people visit as part of an Alaska cruise along the inside passage.
